Conversation: Material Ecologies: Another Deep and Flat Sun

with Asle Nilsen, Annike Flo, Espen Sommer Eide (Verdensteatret), Sébastien Robert and Mark IJzerman, moderated by Katía Truijen

Artists Sébastien Robert and Mark IJzerman, and Asle Nilsen, Annike Flo, and Espen Sommer Eide (Verdensteatret) will enter into a conversation about their audiovisual and theatrical performances Another Deep and Flat Sun. Both performances invite the audience to sense and engage with fragile material ecologies in poetic and performative ways, through immersive scenographies, live A/V performance, and extended cinema experiences.

Sébastien Robert and Mark IJzerman’s Another Deep explores the impending deep-sea mining planned for the Svalbard region of Norway – an act with devastating implications upon the environment, geopolitics, and the ocean’s indigenous ecosystems. Verdensteatret’s Flat Sun draws inspiration from the cyclical nature of energy and waste, in both human and non-human life, prompting the audience to consider the fragile boundary between useful objects and abject ones, between music and noise, and between radiance and shadow.

While sharing about their research journeys, complementary instruments, and artistic approaches, they will discuss how each performance invites the audience to attune to material ecologies and non-human life, and the overlooked processes whose effects influence the surrounding world in significant ways.
