Introducing: 'Sonic Meditations' by Pauline Oliveros

New Suns: A Feminist Literary Festival

With our workshop at New Suns: A Feminist Literary Festival on Saturday 5 October fast approaching, we are offering some background on the subject of the workshop: Pauline Oliveros’ essential ‘Sonic Meditations’.

“Take a walk at night. Walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.”

In the wake of a politically tumultuous period in the United States in the 1970s, electronic music pioneer Pauline Oliveros journeyed inward with her music. She stopped performing in public and started searching for peace and healing through sound. This led her to experiment with aural meditation practices within small all-female groups, which were documented as a set of instructional exercises called ‘Sonic Meditations’.

Pauline sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 84, but ‘Sonic Meditations’ provides an entry into to the extraordinary legacy that she left behind as a musician, humanitarian and deep listener. New Suns: A Feminist Literary Festival offers the rare opportunity to engage in sonic meditation as originally devised by Oliveros and her women’s group ♀Ensemble. The workshop will be hosted by producer object blue and writer Frances Morgan.
