From the turbo DnB of Alec Empire’s ‘The Peak’ to Alice Coltrane and James Blake, we asked pioneering trio Low toput together aplaylist ofmusic that inspired their brazen and empowering new album ‘Double Negative’.
Over the course of twenty-five years and eleven albums, Lowhave cultivated a deeply emotional brand of harmonic, minimalist indie that is steeped in subtle soundscapes and divine harmonies. Not ones to indulge nostalgia, however, their latest album – the critically-acclaimed ‘Double Negative’ – sees the trio defiantly ditch the playbook in favour of a radical new sound. Rooted in a landscape of snarling static and shattering electronic beats, ‘Double Negative’ is easily their most brazen and empowering album to date and has been widelypraised as one of the best releases of the year.
We asked the trio, led by the pairing ofhusband-and-wife Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, to put together a playlist of songs that inspired their remarkable new turn. The fifteen they’ve come up with aren’t for the faint of heart, taking you on an electrifying rollercoaster from the turbo DnB of Alec Empire’s ‘The Peak’ straight to the meditative jazz of Alice Coltrane and Beach Boys harmonies and on to likes of Portishead and James Blake.
