Zimoun

Motors, Strings, Resonance Bodies

Proximity Music: Echoes of Entropy

World premiere

Zimoun transforms the three galleries of Pulchri Studio, The Hague into resonant spaces that oscillate between chaos and order. Crafting distinct sonic territories intricately connected by DC motors, piano strings, metal barrels, water containers, and IBC tanks, each room immerses visitors in a unique vibrational microstructure where sound and visuals converge. The continuous interplay of motors with piano strings causes a rhythmic pulsing activity that is reminiscent of a living organism. Yet, the resulting acoustic hum of the installation transcends the physical space, inviting visitors to focus on their personal perception. Through its monumental scale, it confronts the overwhelming force of chaos in the world, offering a space to engage with it, without fear.

Zimoun is best known for his installative, site-specific immersive works, often working with recycled materials. He produces sounds by employing mechanical principles of rotation and oscillation to put materials into motion. For this, he principally uses materials from everyday life and industrial usage, such as cardboard, DC motors, cables, welding wire, wooden spars, and ventilators. While often arranged in geometric patterns or systematic layouts, the works behave unpredictably once mechanically activated. Within a carefully prepared framework, chaos emerges, creating a balance between control and randomness.
