Yodok III (NO/SE/BE)

A New Wave Of Jazz

Yodok III is a collaboration between three avant-garde and boundary-breaking musicians; Norway’s Kristoffer Lo (amplified tuba), Sweden’s Tomas Järmyr (drums) and Belgium’s Dirk Serries (guitar). Tomas Järmyer and Kristoffer Lo are the backbone of Yodok, and have previously released avant-garde, experimental records that also incorporate elements of genres as diverse as jazz, (post)rock and classical. Serries joined the duo in 2014, and together the trio released the eponymous debut LP on Tonefloat’s A New Wave Of Jazz imprint. The follow-up, the epic double LP, ‘The Sky Flashed, The Great Sea Yarns’ is a set of 4 improvised pieces recorded over the course of 3 days in Brussels. ‘The Sky Flashed, The Great Sea Yarns’ was released in January 2015.

Tomas Järmyr
Born 1987 in Sweden, Tomas Järmyr is currently based in Oslo, and teaches at the Jazz Conservatory in Oslo. With one foot in rock/metal and the other in jazz/improv, Järmyer’s drumming combines wild creativity with extreme energy and presence. He has a plethora of projects that defy categorising; but operate within a vast range of genres from free jazz through death metal and progressive metal, to hardcore and electronica.

Kristoffer Lo
Kristoffer Lo is constantly looking to redefine the use of the tuba; especially it’s role in a modern musical setting. From it’s traditional role in symphony orchestras and Dixieland bands, Kristoffer Lo has looked to incorporate the instrument as the ultra low end in metal, and noise bands. Aided by electronics – and huge amps – his tuba creates an incredible variety and range of sounds that run riot through variations of pitch and tone. Educated at the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim, Lo has been a member of bands like Pelbo, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, microtub, Sunswitch and Highasakite.

Dirk Serries
Since his first releases in the early 1980s, uncompromising Belgian artist Dirk Serries has garnered respect from, and invitations to collaborate with recognised musicians, like Steven Wilson, Steve Von Till and Cult Of Luna. Serries has also worked for a surprisingly wide range of clients, from Dutch broadcaster VPRO to the Antwerp Zoo. The Guardian said of Serries’ work; “A lone guitarist, Dirk Serries produced an inexorable tsunami of guitar drones. From the simplest of musical material – a minor arpeggio, a simple loop – he conjured a physical musical experience that was huge in scale, and monumental in its sonic sophistication. Brilliant.”
