Torus is an alias of Joeri Woudstra, a multidisciplinary artist based in The Hague. Taking the hyper out of hyper pop and transmuting it to genres like ambient and club, Torus utilises dance music vocabularies to dissect pop culture and politics. Following his split album with DJ Lostboi, The Flash (2020) – a cult classic of contemporary experimental music, expanded into a deluxe edition in 2022 – Woudstra worked on a piece for New Museum in New York with artist Kate Cooper, a release on Tresor Records, and his latest A/V project, which is a collaboration with artist Mark Prendergast titled These Cars Do Not Exist – exhibited across both gallery and club contexts. Torus’s Laser Club nights and sets at Laak are beacons of dance experimentation and giddy joy amidst The Hague’s nightlife. Breaking away from the melancholic aura of his produced output, Torus’s DJ sets embrace a headier, maximalist approach, creating thoughtful, living collages of recontextualised club sounds.
