Titanic

world premiere

Performing their debut live performance in a world premiere at the festival, Titanic is a collaboration between cellist, composer, musician, and Rewire alum Mabe Fratti – performing also at Rewire 2024 as part of experimental music collective Amor Muere – and musician Hector Tosta – AKA I la Católica. Though the project’s title might infer something gargantuan and sprawling, they excel in their moments of slight and subtle jazz-playing just as much as they do in their moments of anthemic and ecstatic pop delivery. On their debut album Vidrio (2023), with Tosta providing piano and guitar to accompany Fratti’s reliable cello and distinctive vocals, they are joined by the smoky saxophone wails of Jarrett Gilgore and the airtight drumming of Gibran Andrade. The album is in many ways a bossa-supernova of experimental and familiar sounds reaching in lots of directions, linked together by the adept songwriting and tonal understanding of its collaborators. The chugging cello riffs of “Anónima” hint towards post rock, while the balladic power and chamber pop excellence of “Palacio” is undeniable. “Cielo Faiso” is glittery with poppy energy, while “Balanza” trembles with improvisational intensity. Throughout Titanic’s songs, a charming sincerity rings out in the falsetto timbres of Fratti’s voice, while its underlying instrumentation promises surprises around every corner.
