The Soft Pink Truth is the solo project of Drew Daniel, one half of the experimental duo Matmos. While Matmos steer into maximal sounds of glitched-out musique concrète, The Soft Pink Truth leans into a different kind of maximalism: the flourishing decadence and sparkling opulence of disco, funk, and house. The project arose from a dare: in the early 2000s, a house producer dared Daniel that he couldn’t produce a good house record – and so The Soft Pink Truth was born. From original productions to electronic interpretations of UK punk, American hardcore, and even black metal songs, the project has a humourous and playful foundation, but at its core is a serious sound brimming with colourful synthesis and rhythmic delight. Each release from The Soft Pink Truth asks a question. It started with the foundational Do You Party? (2003); the most recent release asks Is It Going To Get Any Deeper Than This? (2022). It’s safe to bet, in the context of a The Soft Pink Truth set, that the answer to both of these questions is, inevitably, “Yes.”
