The Necks

The Necks are cult favourites of the jazz scene. Made up of pianist Chris Abrahams, bassist Lloyd Swanton, and drummer Tony Buck, The Necks are an improvisational trio from Australia who have collaborated together since 1987. Because of their long standing collaboration, the trio have developed a rare kind of connection that leads to incomparable live performances, communicating together wholly with their instruments. From their smoky, sensual, and aptly titled debut Sex (1988), to their lauded 2017 release Unfold on Stephen O’Malley’s label Ideologic Organ, and to their most recent album Travel (2023), The Necks have carved out a name for themselves as long-form improvisational specialists. But their sound veers into other avenues as well, sounding at times Krauty and jaunty and other times minimal and ambient. Described by The Wire as “Tonal, accessible, and yet profoundly challenging,” and by The New York Times as “the greatest trio on Earth,” we are honoured to present this legendary trio at Rewire 2024 where they will perform live, building with their instruments and deft hands a flourishing and curious sound world that begs to be explored.
