Bristol’s four-piece outfit Quade are made up of Barney Matthews on vocals and bass, Leo Fini on drums, Matt Griffiths on synths and electronics, and Tom Connolly on violin, synths, and guitar. Their debut Nacre (2023), on label AD93, demonstrates their band-sound which is quite unlike any other. Crooning off-bluegrass collides with wailing psychedelic guitars as solemn found samples fuse with agonising violins and pulsing ambient drones in an unusual brand of humble yet powerful music. Quade take post-punk and kraut-rock vocabularies and skew them into something rife with a profound sense of newness – clearly drawing inspiration from their surrounding community and the experimental sounds that mark Bristol as a hotspot for underground electronic music in the UK. Matthews’s gentle baritone murmurs blend perfectly with the group’s underlying instrumentation, which itself tells stories purely through its tone and grit; the variety and uniqueness in the band’s songs, some lullabic and others anthemic, exemplifies the band’s confident understanding of what it takes to create compelling music that eschews genre.
