European premiere
Phét Phét Phét is the project of musician Jarrett Gilgore and a rotating cast of collaborators emerging from the same close-knit Mexico City scene that Titanic and Amor Muere – also performing at this year’s festival – came out of. Acting as leader of the project, Gilgore welcomes for this special performance at Rewire the musicians Ethan Braun and Frank Rosaly.. Phét Phét Phét’s sound is underlined by a classical compositional tightness which recalls composer Ennio Morricone’s tremendous forays into pop. Although the instrumentation and production has a nostalgic tint to its big-band sound, there is an undeniable contemporary sensibility that runs through Phét Phét Phét’s debut album Shimmers (2023) – heard in its jazzy and ambient moments. “Se Siente Como” in particular is a chamber-kraut masterpiece on par with the best contemporary musicians pushing pop to its utmost possibilities. Phét Phét Phét is experimental pop perfection, offering the rare combination of an untethered creative mind working with collaborators who are each themselves inventive trailblazers of the utmost skill.
