Nala Sinephro

NL Premiere

The mystical jazz of London-based Caribbean-Belgian composer, producer, and musician Nala Sinephro is inquisitive and existential – scaling from the minutiae of human experience all the way up to cosmic levels of exploration. Coming up in London’s then-burgeoning new jazz scene after dropping out of school for composition, Sinephro learned through experimentation and collaboration – honing her production and compositional skills while refining her expertise in her instruments of choice: the synthesiser and the harp. Sinephro’s debut album on Warp Records, Space 1.8 (2021), established her as a rising star of spiritual jazz; follow-up Endlessness (2024) cemented that position. Her sophomore album’s delicate reflections on joy, grief, and rebirth are cushioned by blossoming brass flourishes and an arpeggiating synth melody that forms the record’s heartbeat. Her approach to jazz is one of refreshing restraint. “I’m not gonna try and impress people with 60 chords and crazy tunes,” Sinephro told Pitchfork. “I wanted to check out simplicity: the possibility of pressing one note with a shit-tonne of intention.” From this simplicity, entire galaxies expand and contract in Sinephro’s compositions.
