Based between Amsterdam and New York, Mhm, Mhm takes the melodic sensitivity and experimentation of contemporary experimental musicians such as John T. Gast and The Caretaker and combines them with the playful, atmospheric, curious sampling of hip hop producers like Odd Nosdam and RZA. Their late-2022 release on Klein’s Parkwuud Entertainment label, CALLING FOR A PEOPLE TO COME, left a lasting impression on those who stumbled into its ghostly world. Bluesy guitar interventions and snarly syllabic vocal samples strike lightning down upon the barren landscape formed by the haunting central loop of “To be reduced.” The synth pads and droning textures of “More finishes other things,” developing with cinematic pacing, point towards neo-classical minimalist composition, while the percussion and saw-tooth bass of “NOKisNOTOK” hints at a new kind of experimental trap production.
