NL premiere
A funeral procession approaches from over the horizon with heads held low. The exalting brays of flutes, the ghostly harmonies of a timeworn choir, and the gnawing drones of guitars and synthesised organs signal their arrival: producer and composer Maria W Horn and violinist, singer, and composer Sara Parkman present their album Funeral Folk (2022) live at Rewire 2024. A five-piece ensemble of musicians will bring to life this ritualistic and fantastical album that blends traditional folk elements with experimental electronic composition and doom metal. In this collaboration, Horn and Parkman’s arboreal songs echo with an ornamental and cadaverous stillness. The music is unmistakably distinct: open-hearted and open-casketed. Along with such ideas of death come ideas of renewal and reincarnation; such celebratory sensations are ever present in the complex compositions of Funeral Folk. Hope forms the kindling for their funeral pyre. Gaze wistfully at its smoke and listen carefully as Maria W Horn and Sara Parkman present Funeral Folk in the beautiful surrounds of Grote Kerk.
