Listening Session: Echoing Archives: Tracing Iran through Jazz and Big Band

with Katayoun Arian

From the echoes of the vibrant vinyl era of 1960s and 1970s Iran, this listening session brings together archival sounds that focus on jazz fusion and big band music from the region. Through excavating, collecting, research, and curation, Katayoun breathes new, artistic life into these sonic histories. Join her in an immersive journey where melodies, voices, and narratives shape Iran’s rich musical heritage.

Katayoun is an Amsterdam-based selector, DJ, and curator dedicated to researching, preserving, and sharing the sonic diversity and history of Iran. Her broader Iranian Music Archives project encompasses the research and radio show Female Vocalists from Iran and Beyond (2018–ongoing), which explores music from diverse genres, eras (1930s–1980s), and geographies, offering distinctively soulful listening experiences. With Sonic Imaginaries at Kiosk Radio, she builds on this research by tracing Iran’s sonic heritage and drawing connections to other musical traditions, including Latin music, jazz fusion, and funk. Her warm and dreamlike sound has taken her to numerous stages, from supporting Sevdaliza to performing at festivals, museums, and in nightlife.
