Kali Malone is a composer and performer whose latest album, All Life Long (2024), is a masterful achievement of sonic invention and fractal permutation. In the album’s discordant and microtonal aberrations is an ever-shifting tension between repetition and variation. Malone’s music is patient and focused, built on a foundation of evolving harmonic cycles that draw out latent emotional resonances. Although abound with ceremonious harmonies and a capacious sense of space, a humble and hushed humanity circulates Malone’s compositions for pipe organ, choir, and brass quintet. In her hands, experimental reinterpretations of centuries-old polyphonic compositional methods become portals into new ways of perceiving harmony, structure, and introspection. Malone’s music builds monuments of sound so as to sow secrets in their shadows. Listen to what is unveiled – or kept shrouded – when she presents All Life Long, for the first time in the Netherlands, performed upon the organ of Grote Kerk, together with vocal ensemble Macadam – who appear on All Life Long – a brass ensemble, and SUNN O)))’s Stephen O'Malley.
