Jozef van Wissem is a celebrated Dutch minimalist composer and lute player from Maastricht in the Netherlands. Drawing on Biblical ideas and No Wave influences, Van Wissem looks to experiment with Renaissance and Baroque forms of lute music. Many of his compositions for the instrument have involved a dynamic mix of conceptual, minimalist, classical and improvisational approaches; often using cut-and-paste tactics, experiments with palindromics, field recordings and free improvisation. The resulting sound is often a marriage of opposites; meditative and intense, forward thinking but also in love with a sense of the arcane.
