Performing Sunday 5 April
Partnering up with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision’s RE:VIVE initiative, Rewire presents the live premiere of ‘Sutarti’ by Scottish composer and sound designer Joshua Sabin. Created using archival folk music from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre Ethnomusicology Archive, and released via Subtext Records, ‘Sutarti’ explores the human voice as a vessel for communication and emotion. The record specifically reflects on the ritual songs of the sutartinė, a form of polyphonic music featuring two or more voices that purposefully clash, creating extremely precise dissonances, performed by female singers in North-East Lithuania. At Rewire 2020, Sabin will present ‘Sutarti’ together with Šalavija singing live, a Lithuanian folklore ensemble consisting of four ethnomusicologists focused on preserving the tradition and archaic sounds of the sutartinės.
