Returning to Rewire, having played with many projects over the years, artists and musicians Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank Rosaly bring the exuberant and mystical MESTIZX to the stage of Koorenhuis – accompanied by Ben Boye on synths, Matthew Lux on bass, and Ben LaMar Gay, also performing at the festival with his ensemble, on cornet and electronics. MESTIZX, released on label International Anthem in 2024, is a dreamy album whose branches grow in many directions. Drawing inspirations from their Bolivian, Brazilian, and Puerto Rican ancestry, Ferragutti & Rosaly together make incantations with their instruments, drawing magic out from these deep roots and channelling it into their resistance songs. Their music forms a habitat for burgeoning percussion and melody – from the soothing sounds of Ferragutti’s voice to the bright clarity of LaMar Gay’s cornet and the driving rhythm of Lux’s bass and Rosaly’s drums. Although jazzy and experimental at its core, Ferragutti & Rosaly’s music contains echoes of many influences, from the folk tradition of Bolivia to the psychedelic Tropicália fusions of Brazil. It is vivacious and soft, building a unique ecology of rumbling, bubbling vibrations.
