HHY & The Macumbas are an enigmatic anomaly of psych sounds. With artist Jonathan Uliel Saldanha acting as director of the ensemble, HHY & The Macumbas functions as a mutating group of friends and musicians who have been involved in Porto’s music scene for over 15 years. With an almost animalistic, more-than-human energy, their songs tumble and roll forward, decimating all in their path, leaving only rubble and soil in their wake upon which new things can sprout and come into being. Propelled by drums and percussion, the dubby experimental sounds that the band produces are dense with visuality and vigour. Hypnotic minimal melodic cycles, percussive rhythms that warp time and space, and echoes that hurt out towards the outer edges of the mind are all to be heard in their songs. Their two albums Throat Permission Cut (2014) and its follow-up Beheaded Totem (2019) are sonic experiences without rival. Hear their beckoning trumpets and step into their strange place of rhythmic battery, chaos-jazz, and overwhelming electronic magic. Their new album, Bom Sangue Mau (2024) – which translates to “Good Bad Blood” – will be released at the end of April 2024.
