Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko

Гільдеґарда

Heinali is the moniker of composer and sound artist Oleh Shpudeiko. His artistic practice reimagines early music through modular synthesis, viewing the past as a mirror that reflects contemporary experience. Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko is a musician, singer, and actor, who explores the voice as an instrument. Her cross-genre explorations bring together authentic Ukrainian singing, jazz, and electronic music – always with an ear for the subtle sensibilities of folk music as a living material. Гільдеґарда (“Hildegard” in Ukrainian) is their collaborative reimagining of Hildegard von Bingen's music. This piece combines Saienko's singing, rooted in traditional Ukrainian vocal techniques, with Heinali's modular synthesis, which draws on medieval polyphony and monophony. Together, they aim to highlight the physicality of Hildegard's music while reflecting on and processing wartime experience – in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine – and parsing the raw spirituality that emerges from it.
