Gordan’s hypnotic and mesmerising music treats ancient folkloric knowledge and melodies from the Balkans as foundations upon which to conduct drone-driven, psychedelic, kraut-punk experiments. The trio are made up of Berlin-based duo GAMS – Andi Stecher on drums and multi-instrumentalist Guido Moebius – and Serbian singer and ethnomusicologist Svetlana Spajiç. Developed during lockdown in Berlin, the songs on their debut album Down In The Meadow (2021) create a strange sense of space: both unwieldy and open while also being imbued with an introspective, quiet closeness. Listening to their songs is like discovering an ancient ruin amidst a contemporary cityscape. Seeming somehow untouched, ever authentic, and yet fully of their time, the radical reimaginings of Gordan interpret age-old songs with a renewed sense of urgency for the present moment.
