Artist Jessica Sarah Rinland, throughout her career, has incisively investigated how human and animal kinship is mediated, with particular interest around how this happens in and through institutions; in Collective Monologue, she turns her attention to zoos, animal rescue centers, and regional animal parks across Argentina. She uncovers the histories of these institutions, while depicting the workers who are dedicated to caring for these enclosed animals. Across this slow, careful, and meditative film's footage and interviews, the intricacy and complexity of interspecies connectivity is explored – probing at the boundaries between intimacy and control.
