It’s not by chance that in recent years a small mythology has been building around New York group Deli Girls – the project of vocalist Dan Orlowski, who has been working recently with DJ and producer Hatechild. The brash, chaotic, and sweaty energy of one of their live shows is hard to put down in words. It’s physical, it’s communal, it’s outright. Deli Girls’s unique mixture of poppy noise punk, broken nu-metal, and addled electropunk has been evolving over the years – grit and dirt and crust have been amassing on their sound as their BPMs have climbed higher and higher. The punky simplicity of debut album Evidence (2017) and the bassy grunge-tinged industrial of their breakout I Don’t Know How to Be Happy (2019) have been building towards what can be heard on their recent eponymous album from 2023: catchy breakpunk for dancing and moshing in equal measure. Want to hear what Auto-Tune does to a scream? With the distorted bass drum reigning in their music like a holy relic, seeing Deli Girls live is like a religious event that has to be experienced to be understood. Whether you’re a gabberina or a punk, all can find a home in the sticky embrace of this mosh pit.
