Conversation: Music Journalism Today and Rewire Reflections zine launch

with Sasha Frere-Jones, Alan Marzo-Strani and Olivier Duport (FLEE project), and Rewire Reflections participants, moderated by Hugo Emmerzael

During this panel talk, Sasha-Frere Jones, Alan Marzo-Strani and Olivier Duport of FLEE, and Rewire Reflections participants will enter into a conversation with Hugo Emmerzael on the state of music journalism today. How can one understand the changing ecology of specialist music platforms, independent media outlets and their struggles, and the shifting role of music journalists? Which editorial formats engage critically and creatively with music today and feel especially effective and valuable? As part of the conversation, participants of the workshop Rewire Reflections will launch their music magazine covering Rewire festival 2025.

Sasha Frere-Jones is a writer and musician from New York.

FLEE is an art collective founded by Alan Marzo, Olivier Duport, and Carl Åhnebrink. It operates as an independent publisher, record label, and curatorial platform. By shedding light on subjectively selected sound and cultural phenomena, FLEE interacts with contemporary artistic approaches.

Alan Marzo-Strani is a Paris-based transdisciplinary artist and researcher. Known for his satirical style, navigating between sculpture and moving image, his films and installations have been presented in exhibitions globally, including at institutions such as Casa Castex (Buenos Aires), MAAT in Lisbon, and the Sharjah Art Foundation. He regularly releases music on labels like Bordello a Parigi and Maledetta Discoteca.

Olivier Duport is a French-Austrian photographer, researcher, and artistic director. Fusing anthropology with avant-garde research, his work focuses primarily on architectural photography. Celebrated internationally, his latest publication, Fiat Lux (2022), offers a fresh perspective on modern sacred architecture in Southern Italy. His work has been featured in venues such as Les Rencontres d’Arles and the Oggetto Libro Biennale in Milan.

Hugo Emmerzael is an Amsterdam-based film critic and music critic. He’s an editor of independent Dutch print magazine Filmkrant, and a contributor to outlets such as MUBI Notebook, Senses of Cinema, Filmmaker Magazine, and Gonzo (circus). His curatorial work bridges experimental film and mainstream cinema, discovering new approaches to programming and engaging with film, music, and art.
