Eight-piece group caroline are made up of founding members Casper Hughes, Jasper Llewellyn and Mike O’Malley, alongside Alex McKenzie, Freddy Wordsworth, Hugh Aynsley, Magdalena McLean, and Oliver Hamilton. Grounded in improvisational urges, caroline draw from their shared influences of midwestern emo guitar music, Appalachian folk, and minimalist classical to create a sound that is eerily familiar despite sounding quite unlike anything else. The spirit of the band’s sound is urged on by the sense of communality and balance in their performances and recordings. Like vibrating atoms, elements of each member’s instrument or voice co-exist, flowing in and out of the centre, taking a brief spotlight or becoming frayed from the whole, before returning to the single symbiotic organism that is caroline. Their forthcoming album, which they premiere at Rewire 2025, seeks to build upon the deep foundations of their eponymous debut from 2022 on Rough Trade Records – and with it, their live set-up evolves too, stepping out of the intimate towards the monumental.
