Body Meπa

European premiere

Exploding stars might sound like this: Body Meπa are a quartet made up of Greg Fox on drums, Sasha Frere-Jones and Grey McMurray on guitar, and Melvin Gibbs on bass. Amidst swirling effects loops and cyclical and explosive percussion, this group of genre-traversing luminaries teases out works of delectable scale, cavernous breadth, and diabolic warmth. Coming from differing and intersecting traditions of improvised music, rock, jazz, fusion, and contemporary classical, the four come together as Body Meπa – a group which not so much make post-rock, but rather mutate it. At the group’s core is a cacophonous and joyous process of experimentation in and with time and sustain. They stretch and flatten it out, all the while playing chaotically in the resulting psychedelic half-states that emerge in the mulch. Their delayed and overlapping guitars slide in and out of comprehension, among the immense percussion of Fox and the driving, melodic bass of Gibbs. They describe their sound as “New York City body music,” and certainly follow in the long lineage of experimental, hard-edged, and deconstructive approaches to rock music which have echoed out of that fabled city.
