As Amnesia Scanner, the Berlin-based Finnish duo Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala reflect on the system vulnerabilities, informational overload, and sensory excess of the late capitalist present with acute music and intense visuals. Blurring the boundaries between cultural critics and abrasive club act, Amnesia Scanner have captured our anxious zeitgeist like no other. Landmark releases like AS Live [][][][][], AS, and AS Truth were forceful entries in the rapidly evolving niche of deconstructed club music, while albums Another Life and Tearless showcased the duo’s knack for longform, narrative-driven albums.
Following a slew of experimental and innovative performances, Amnesia Scanner have teamed up with New York City-based digital artist Freeka Tet for snaptrance.webcam, which is developed out of their Unplugged performance, described by the artists as an “album which will never be released,” but can only be heard and experienced during live performances – either streamed online or witnessed in real life. Honing in on themes of isolation and survivalism, Unplugged premiered in 2021 as a livestream, broadcasted from an undisclosed forest location for three consecutive days. For Rewire 2023, Amnesia Scanner & Freeka Tet adapted the work for the site-specific performance of snaptrance.webcam in The Hague, featuring bespoke stage and visual design.
