Aïsha Devi – born in Switzerland with Nepali Indigenous heritage – describes her sound as “Atherave.” Her experimental, dislocated pop music emerges from the misty plane of the not-yet, utilising her powerful voice in combination with rave stabs, corporeal sonics, and thumping beats. Through her music she conjures new realities to inhabit, ones which are post-human, extra-terrestrial, and overflowing with transmutations. Her latest album Death Is Home (2023), comes from a solemn yet hopeful place: it was developed following Devi’s attempts to track down her now deceased father B.K. Gurung, a Nepali drummer whom she never knew. The album attempts to unravel the strict boundaries between life and death, suggesting that there is another way to experience corporeality and spirit that is free from the drab rationality of western thought. In this mystic and sonic space that drips with virtual possibility and cyborg manifestations, Devi’s deft songwriting and imaginative pop production take centre stage: pitch-shifted vocals utter chants above ceremonial percussion and cavernous synths. At Rewire, Aïsha Devi will present ‘Les Immortelles’, a live performance in combination with scenography by visual artist Emmanuel Biard and featuring music from Death is Home.
