The alias of British electronic musician and producer Darren J. Cunningham, Actress has established himself as one of the most singular voices in UK electronic music. Operating at the cutting-edge of club culture for more than a decade, his shadowy, unpredictable music draws heavily on 2-step garage, bass-heavy sounds, and London’s rave heritage. For his latest project, released as a mini-album and now a fully-fledged live AI/AV performance, Actress explores the creative and social potentials of machine learning and artificial intelligence with the help of an AI-based character named ‘Young Paint’. Having spent the better part of 2018 learning and programming on a diet of Actress’ unique sonic palette, ‘Young Paint’ now takes the stage as a life-size projection, paralleling its creator’s performance in a unique digital duet between man and machine.
