¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U has been building his status as a legendary DJ over the past few years. Originally from Osaka – where he ran his Zone Unknown parties – the versatile and unpredictable DJ, who has been described as “something like a combination of shaman, warrior, and trickster” by Pitchfork, is now based in Tokyo. His raucous genre-hopping and shirt-removing sets bring heat in every meaning of the word; they have to be heard to be believed. ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U’s expertise and delectable selections made him a fixture in Asian Dope Boys’ fabled TRANCE durational performances. The mix-album Midnight is Comin' (2022), on Singapore label Midnight Shift, provides a good primer to ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U’s immense sound: from Gabber Modus Operandi to DJ Nobu, ambient and hardcore intermingle while noise and rhythm are abound – all intricately interwoven through his experimental CD-J mastery. His DJ set at Rewire 2025 promises to be a whirring journey through the diverse spectrum of noisy, joyous, and hard-edged club sounds.
