With their final album ‘in tow, noise rock pioneersMichael Gira and his Swans finally return to The Hague.
First formed in 1982, the legendary New York experimental outfit surrounding singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira has had a profound impact on the musical world. Blazing a fiercely uncompromising path through no wave, art-rock, industrial, sludge, doom, drone and folk, Swans have always championed a flagrant disregard for genre boundaries and, by extension, continuity.
Their turbulent 30-year history, one of countless evolutions, reinventions, and lineup changes, is inextricably linked to band leader Michael Gira’s own sonic pilgrimage. Reluctant to carry the baggage of Swans-past, Gira pulled the plug in 1997, only for Swans to suddenly return in 2010 with the critically acclaimed ‘My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky’.
In the six years since, Gira and Swans have charted soaring new heights. Releasing three revered albums – including final chapter ‘The Glowing Man’ just last year – the band have only served to feed their almost mythical status. A dream come true, Swans’ performance at Rewire 2017 could well be their last in these nether lands.
