A rare collaboration between two musical masters, Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills and legendary afrobeat drummer Tony Allen join forces for a very special live performance.
Hailed as one of the true originators of Detroit’s infamous techno scene, Jeff Mills emerged in the 1980s as radio host/DJ savant ‘The Wizard’ before going on to found groundbreaking collective Underground Resistance. In the 30 years since, Jeff Mills has become one of the most influential figures in electronic music. Fluidly transitioning from iconic DJ to visionary producer and back, his adventurous explorations of electronic sound, science-fiction and space transcend club settings, charting a course deep into the realms experimental composition, film, and even orchestral performance.
His counterpart on the night is legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen. Best known for defining the pulse of Fela Kuti’s propulsive Afrobeat sound, the self-taught Tony Allen combined American funk, jazz and R&B with highlife and Nigerian percussion to revolutionize drumming. No stranger to the realms of electronic music, Tony Allen has previously worked with the likes of celebrated Detroit-based DJ Theo Parrish and German dub techno innovator Moritz Oswald, even joining the latter’s lauded trio in 2015.
At Rewire 2017, the two musical masters come together for just the second time in their storied careers. Following up their Paris debut, Jeff Mills and Tony Allen treat Rewire to an hour-long, jazz-infused fusion of expansive techno textures and pulsating live percussion.
